Psychotherapy Training and Accreditation
John holds a BA Honours Degree in Psychology, a Post – Graduate Higher Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy and Master’s Degree in Psychotherapy from Dublin Business School (DBS). He is a fully accredited member of the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapists (IAHIP) and a registrant with the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP). He attends regular supervision and continuous professional development as part of his ethical commitment to his clinical work and abides by the code of ethics as outlined by IAHIP.
John is also a member of EMDR Europe. In addition to his core Psychodynamic training, John has undergone Post – Graduate training in Trauma Focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) under the direction of renowned Trauamtologist Ms Lucia Hall. In addition to this approach to treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), John is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) delivered by Dr. Michael Paterson OBE, EMDR Europe Accredited Senior Trainer.
Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach
John offers a confidential, non-judgmental and supportive space for his clients. He strongly believes in the collaboration between client and therapist in the formation and maintenance of the therapeutic relationship as instrumental in the repair of developmental ruptures. John views the developing person across the life-span from a Biopsychosocial standpoint, and compassionately and sensitively brings his clients awareness to these parts of self as they make sense of their inner and outer world through the exploration of their personal history, thus fostering the development of self-awareness, self-acceptance and relational growth. John’s Psychotherapeutic approach is informed by his theoretical background which integrates Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Person-Centred, Systemic, Existential and Trauma Focussed – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches which he tailors to meet the needs of his clients.
Counselling Experience and Areas of Interest
John also works as a psychotherapist in a Third Level Education Institute Student Counselling Service, providing psychological support to a diverse student population. He has developed considerable experience working with a wide range of issues including -Anxiety and Depression, Bereavement, Self –Harm, Suicidality ,Low self-esteem, LGBT Issues, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Eating Disorders, Body Dysmorphia, and Personal and Workplace Relationship Difficulties.
John has a particular interest in the treatment of PTSD and utilises EMDR, TF-CBT and Somatosensory Psychotherapy to facilitate therapeutic change in this presentation. John also works as a Lecturer and Trainer on DBS’ Post – Graduate Higher Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy modules – Stress Response I & II.
